USE YOUR VOICE
DEMAND CHANGE
Demand change from shops, supermarkets, governments, banks and others. Always be polite and reasonable and never hector or get cross. You can politely inform the retailer, for example, that you prefer organic fresh produce, no plastic packaging, sustainable fabrics, UK-sourced food to imported food (where UK source is an option), and so on. Make your preferences known! If lots of customers do this it WILL have an effect.
TALK TO YOUR CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE
It’s not just about governments and large companies, talking just with family, friends, bosses and on social media makes a big difference. Can you ask your boss to reduce their amount of waste, or look at their carbon footprint? Can you get your children to recycle or walk to school? Can you ask your spouse to turn down the thermostat? It’s all important. If you are too shy for this maybe you could wear an eco-message badge/ t-shirt.
GET POLITICAL
With local and national government you should make your views known on policy issues that are important to you. In Monmouthshire your councilor can be found at https://www.monmouthshire.gov.uk/?id=home Remember that all elected representatives are there to serve you, and are answerable to their constituents. So you are never bothering them - they are there, and paid, to be bothered.
TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER
Join a local group. At your local Friends of the Earth group, you will find like-minded people who, like you, want to make a difference.
